Belly
After Baby is a yoga class designed to help your body regain core strength
after pregnancy, and specifically to help heal diastasis recti,
the separation of the abdominal muscles, and the cause of the mummy
tummy. All moms have some form of the mummy tummy after pregnancy
because as the uterus expands for your growing baby, the abdominal muscles
must stretch away from each other. After giving birth, the uterus
goes back to its normal size, but the separation of your abdominal muscles
often remains. Without the support of the abdominal muscle girdle,
the internal organs often fall forward, and the back pain resulting
from pregnancy continues and can even worsen.
Unfortunately, not all core strengthening exercises help to bring the rectus abdominus muscles back together. In fact, most traditional core exercises, like crunches, actually increase the separation. Belly After Baby Yoga focuses on decreasing the core muscle separation, while building strength in all three sets of the abdominals (transverse abdominus, rectus abdominus, and the obliques), the low back, and the pelvic floor. And, because it is a yoga class, the entire body is strengthened and stretched as well.
Belly After Baby is taught as a monthly series of either 4 or 5 classes. Often, moms take the series multiple times and/or come regularly. All levels of yoga experience welcome!
