Infant massage is natural, loving, and extremely beneficial for babies’ growth and development. Massaged babies thrive and here’s why:
Infant massage is relaxing and soothing for both parent and infant:
Nurturing touch relieves stress for both moms and babies and has been shown to decrease levels of Cortisol (stress hormone) in the body. Cortisol is always present in our bloodstream, but high levels of this hormone can be found in our bodies during times of extreme stress. The relationship between a parent and baby is enhanced and strengthened through the nurturing touch of infant massage. Parents often find that their baby sleeps better, fusses less, and gains more weight, when massaged regularly.
Infant massage stimulates healthy growth and development:
Research has shown that there is a biological connection between stroking and massaging infants and their growth. Touch stimulates growth-promoting hormones and makes the cells of the vital organs more responsive to the growth-promoting effects of these hormones. Studies also show that newborns receiving extra touch display enhanced neurological development. Why? Researchers believe that touch promotes the growth of myelin, the insulating material that facilitates the travel of nerve impulses.
Additionally, infant massage has been shown to enhance the digestion process. Touch stimulates the secretion of digestive hormones, which assist in the absorption of nutrients and elimination of what is not needed. Infant massage also reduces the symptoms of colic in some babies.
Infant Massage deepens bonding and helps babies sleep better:
Practicing regular infant massage enhances bonding, parent/baby communication, and ability to nurture. During massage, the hormone Oxytocin is released in both the parent and infant’s bodies. Oxytocin is the feel good hormone, also known as the hormone of love. This hormone helps us fall in love with our babies. Massage also settles babies. Infants that are massaged regularly sleep deeper and longer.
All Mom and Baby Bonding Yoga classes integrate infant massage techniques. Each class ends with approximately 10 minutes of infant massage.
